Byzantine AV Solidus Emp. Heraclius & Her. (613-641 AD) Ch AU NGC
Struck during the seventh century, this gold solidus offers a window into the joint rule of the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius and his son, Heraclius Constantine, who shared the throne from 613 to 641 AD. The obverse of this ancient coin displays the facing busts of both rulers, side by side, representing the dynastic continuity of the empire. Surrounding their likenesses is the Latin inscription identifying the co-emperors as perpetual rulers. The reverse of the coin features a prominent cross potent, a cross with flat bars at the ends of its arms, resting atop three steps. This sacred symbol is framed by the inscription celebrating victory, while the letters below the steps indicate the Constantinople mint. Containing 0.1400 troy ounces of gold, this specimen has survived the centuries in exceptional condition, graded as Choice Almost Uncirculated.
