Byzantine Billon Aspron Trachy Alexius III (1195-1203 AD) F NGC
During the turn of the thirteenth century, the Byzantine Empire produced a distinctive style of coinage known as the scyphate, or cup-shaped, coin. This billon aspron trachy, minted during the reign of Emperor Alexius III between 1195 and 1203 AD, is a fascinating physical artifact of that medieval era. Measuring approximately 22 millimeters in diameter and weighing around 3.6 grams, its unusual concave-convex shape immediately sets it apart from modern flat coinage. One side of this intriguing coin displays a forward-facing bust of Christ, a hallmark of Byzantine religious art. The opposite side depicts Emperor Alexius III on the left alongside Saint Constantine on the right, standing together in a symbolic display of imperial authority and divine association. Cataloged by numismatists as Sear 2011, this piece has survived the centuries to offer us a direct visual connection to the late Byzantine world, and has been certified in Fine condition.
