Struck at the legendary mint of Constantinople during the late eleventh century, this gold histamenon nomisma represents the coinage of the Byzantine Empire under Emperor Michael VII, who ruled from 1071 to 1078 AD. This particular specimen survives in an impressive Extra Fine state of preservation, offering a remarkably clear window into medieval artistry and imperial representation. The obverse of the coin displays a half-length, forward-facing portrait of Christ Pantocrator. He is depicted with a cruciform nimbus, a halo containing a cross, where five distinct pellets are visible within each bar of the cross. This sacred imagery was a central feature of Byzantine currency, serving as a powerful statement of faith and authority. On the reverse, the coin features a bust of Emperor Michael VII himself.
