Cappadocian Kingdom AR Drachm Ariobarzanes I (96-63 BC) F NGC

0.1200 troy oz 96-63 BC Fine (NGC)

This ancient silver drachm, minted during the turbulent era of 96 to 63 BC, offers a tangible connection to the Cappadocian Kingdom. The obverse of the coin displays a right-facing portrait of King Ariobarzanes I. On the reverse, the goddess Athena is depicted holding Nike, the personification of victory. This specimen has survived the centuries in Fine condition, preserving these classical Hellenistic motifs. The reign of Ariobarzanes I was defined by intense geopolitical struggle and shifting alliances. He ascended to the throne through a vote by the citizenry after the Roman Senate dismissed the claims of Ariarathes IX. Supported by the Roman consul Lucius Cornelius Sulla, Cappadocia functioned as a protectorate of Rome during this period. This Roman alignment made Ariobarzanes I a target, and he was deposed three times by King Mithridates. Despite these frequent disruptions, Ariobarzanes I managed to expand his territory during the Third Mithridatic War with the assistance of the Roman general Pompey. His family line included his wife, Athenais Philostorgos I, a daughter named Isias Philostorgos, and a son, Ariobarzanes II. Around 63 to 62 BC, the king stepped down from power, abdicating the throne to his son and securing his family's legacy on the Cappadocian throne.
