This ancient silver drachm originates from the Kingdom of Cappadocia, minted during the turbulent reign of King Ariobarzanes I, who held power from 96 to 63 BC. Unlike many rulers of his era, Ariobarzanes I initially ascended to the throne through a vote of the citizenry. His position was heavily bolstered by the Roman consul Lucius Cornelius Sulla, cementing the kingdom's status as a protectorate of Rome. The obverse of this silver coin features a right-facing portrait of King Ariobarzanes I. The reverse depicts the goddess Athena holding Nike, the personification of victory. This imagery stands as a testament to a highly dramatic reign. King Mithridates successfully deposed Ariobarzanes I on three separate occasions, yet each time the Cappadocian ruler reclaimed his throne. Through alliance with the Roman general Pompey during the Third Mithridatic War, Ariobarzanes I eventually expanded his sovereign territory. His reign concluded with his abdication around 63 to 62 BC, passing the crown to his son, Ariobarzanes II. His daughter, Isias Philostorgos, would also secure a royal legacy by marrying King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene. This specific coin has survived the centuries, preserved in Extra Fine condition.
