This ancient silver drachm, weighing approximately 0.12 troy ounces, originates from the Kingdom of Cappadocia during the reign of King Ariobarzanes I. The coin features a detailed right-facing portrait of the monarch on the obverse, while the reverse depicts the goddess Athena holding Nike. This specimen has survived more than two millennia, preserved in certified Choice Fine condition. The history behind this coinage is deeply tied to the geopolitics of the ancient Mediterranean. Ariobarzanes I ascended to the throne through a popular vote by the citizens of Cappadocia, a choice made after the Roman Senate dismissed the claim of Ariarathes IX. His reign was heavily backed by Rome, starting with the support of the consul Lucius Cornelius Sulla, which established Cappadocia as a Roman protectorate. Maintaining power was a constant struggle for Ariobarzanes I. The rival monarch King Mithridates forced him from his throne on three separate occasions. Despite these interruptions, Ariobarzanes I eventually expanded his territory with the assistance of the Roman general Pompey during the Third Mithridatic War. He was married to Athenais Philostorgos I, and their children included Isias Philostorgos and Ariobarzanes II, the latter of whom succeeded his father when the king abdicated around 63 to 62 BC.
