In the ancient Mediterranean, the island of Rhodes off the coast of Caria produced distinctive coinage that beautifully reflected its local identity. This copper AE19 coin, dating from the first century AD, survives as a tangible connection to that classical era, preserved in Very Fine condition. The obverse of this coin features the profile of Helios, the ancient Greek sun god, looking toward the right. Helios held a central place in the culture of Rhodes, and his depiction on the local currency was a powerful symbol of the island. On the reverse, a rose blossom is depicted in detail. This choice of imagery is a clever visual pun, as the Greek word for rose, 'rhodon', directly mirrors the name of the island itself.
