China Song Dynasty AE Cash (960-1279 AD) Avg Circ
During the Song Dynasty, which spanned from 960 to 1279 AD, Imperial China produced a distinctive style of currency that became a cornerstone of commerce throughout East Asia. These cast copper Cash coins feature a highly recognizable design centered around a square middle hole. This functional shape allowed the money to be easily strung together on cords for efficient transport and counting in bustling ancient marketplaces. The obverse of each coin displays traditional Chinese characters arranged around the central opening, identifying the piece and its authority. In contrast to the detailed calligraphy on the front, the reverse side was left entirely plain. Rather than being confined to the borders of the empire, these durable copper pieces traveled extensively, serving as a trusted medium of exchange in neighboring Japan and Korea as well.
