China Xin Dynasty AE Cash Wang Mang (9-23 AD) Avg Circ
This ancient bronze cash coin dates back to the Xin Dynasty, a brief period in Chinese history spanning from 9 to 23 AD. Minted under the authority of the ruler Wang Mang, these distinctive pieces of currency played a significant role in the daily commerce of the era. Rather than being confined to a single region, this coinage circulated widely throughout ancient China, Japan, and Korea, illustrating the deep economic connections of the ancient East Asian world. The obverse of the coin features traditional Chinese characters arranged around a central square hole, a characteristic design element of classic Chinese cash coinage. This central aperture served a highly practical purpose, allowing merchants and citizens to string multiple coins together for easy transport and counting. In contrast to the inscribed front, the reverse side of the coin is entirely plain, showcasing the raw texture of the ancient bronze.
