Eastern Roman Empire Gold Solidus Marcian (450-457 AD) XF NGC 3/2
Struck during the mid fifth century, this gold solidus originates from the Eastern Roman Empire under the rule of Emperor Marcian, who governed from 450 to 457 AD. Weighing approximately 4.46 grams, this ancient coin represents the standard of currency that sustained the eastern half of the Roman world through a turbulent era of transition. The obverse of the coin displays a detailed bust of Marcian, turned slightly to the right. The emperor is depicted wearing a helmet and a cuirass, adorned with a pearl diadem. In his hands, he carries a spear draped over his shoulder alongside a defensive shield, presenting a powerful military image typical of late Roman imperial authority. On the reverse, the design features the winged figure of Victory standing and facing left. She holds a large, ornate cross decorated with jewels, a motif that reflects the shifting cultural and religious landscape of the empire during this period. This particular specimen has survived the centuries in an exceptional state of preservation, certified as Extra Fine.
