Egypt Alexandria BI Tetradrachm Diocletian (284-305 AD) XF NGC
During the ancient Roman imperial era, the bustling port city of Alexandria, Egypt, served as a vital minting hub. This billon tetradrachm, struck during the years 288 to 289 AD, offers a tangible connection to that distant provincial administration. The coin dates specifically to the fifth year of the reign of Emperor Diocletian, who ruled the Roman world from 284 to 305 AD. Crafted from billon, a low-purity silver alloy containing a small fraction of precious metal, the coin features distinct designs on both sides. The obverse displays a right-facing bust of Diocletian wearing a laurel wreath. On the reverse, the personification of the city of Alexandria is depicted standing and facing to the left. This specimen has survived the centuries in remarkable condition, earning a generic grade of Extra Fine.
