Great Britain Gold Edward VII Sovereign Coins (Random) Avg Circ
The British Sovereign represents a cornerstone of global monetary history, emerging from the Great Recoinage of 1816 to replace the gold guinea. Valued at twenty shillings, these pieces functioned as active circulating currency throughout the vast British Empire. Each coin contains 0.2354 troy ounces of pure gold content, struck in a durable 0.9167 fine gold alloy. On the obverse, the bust of King Edward VII faces a specific direction, maintaining a long-standing tradition where each successive monarch alternates the way they face compared to their predecessor. The surrounding Latin inscription includes portions of his royal titles, such as EDWARDUS VII D.G. BRITT. OMN. REX F.D. IND. IMP., celebrating his status as king and defender of the faith. The reverse displays one of the most celebrated designs in numismatic history: Saint George on horseback, triumphing over a mythical dragon. Created by the artist Benedetto Pistrucci, this dynamic image has graced the Sovereign since the series began in 1817. Pistrucci received the commission for this iconic artwork from William Wellesley Pole, ensuring a visual legacy that would be struck at The Royal Mint and various other commonwealth mint facilities across the globe.
