The British Gold Sovereign represents a classic tradition in metallic currency, first emerging from the Great Recoinage of 1816. Introduced to replace the gold guinea, this coin carried a face value of 20 shillings and circulated widely throughout the vast territories of the British Empire. Each piece contains 0.2354 troy ounces of pure gold, minted at the Royal Mint in London as well as various commonwealth branch mints since its debut in 1817. On the front, the coin displays the portrait of the monarch who was reigning at the time of minting. British numismatic custom dictates that the direction the ruler faces must alternate with each successive reign, creating a shifting visual timeline across the generations.
