The British Gold Sovereign represents a classic tradition in coinage, minted by the Royal Mint along with various other Commonwealth minting facilities. Each of these gold pieces contains 0.2354 troy ounces of gold, struck with a purity of 0.9167. Because these coins have circulated through time, individual examples may show signs of cleaning, wear, or damage, giving them a distinct, lived-in character that speaks to their journey through commerce. On the obverse, the coin displays the portrait of the reigning monarch from the year it was struck. The reverse features one of the most celebrated numismatic illustrations in history: Saint George on horseback, triumphantly slaying a mythical dragon.
