In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, international commerce required a reliable medium of exchange. To meet this need, the Royal Mint produced the British Trade Dollar. These silver coins circulated heavily in eastern commerce, facilitating transactions with the Orient during a dynamic era of global trade. Spanning dates from the late 1800s through 1930, each of these historic pieces is now more than 85 years old. The design of the coin reflects its global purpose, blending Western and Eastern artistic traditions. The obverse features a striking depiction of Britannia, the female personification of the British Isles. She stands proudly holding her traditional shield and trident, with the year of minting displayed below. This classic British imagery is contrasted beautifully on the reverse, which showcases intricate Oriental designs arranged within a central cross, reflecting the cultural landscape where these coins were intended to circulate. Struck with a purity of 0.900 fine silver, each coin contains 0.780 troy ounces of precious metal. Preserved in Very Fine condition, these trade dollars show honest wear from their time in active circulation, serving as tangible survivors of early modern global commerce.
