This ancient silver drachm, minted during the reign of the Indo-Scythian ruler Azes around 58 BC, represents a fascinating bridge between diverse ancient cultures. Weighing approximately 0.08 troy ounces, this issue stands out as one of the earliest examples of bilingual coinage in human history. The coin bridges two distinct worlds by featuring legends in both Greek lettering and the ancient Kharosthi script, a writing system once utilized in Gandhara for recording Sanskrit and Gandhari Prakrit. The visual design of the coin showcases the authority and spiritual connections of the era. The front side displays the striking image of a king riding a horse toward the right. On the reverse, the design features a classical deity, which can be Athena, Zeus, or Poseidon, accompanied by Scythian script.
