Struck over two millennia ago, this silver drachm belongs to the reign of the Indo-Scythian ruler Azes. It represents a remarkable historical era, with much of this coinage minted prior to the birth of Christ, some potentially produced on the very day of his birth, and all of it actively circulating during his lifetime. This issue stands out as one of the earliest examples of bilingual coinage. The obverse displays a detailed depiction of the king riding a horse toward the right. On the reverse, observers will find a deity, which could be Athena, Zeus, or Poseidon, accompanied by Scythian writing. The inscriptions themselves are a testament to ancient cultural fusion, featuring Greek lettering alongside Kharosthi script. Kharosthi is a writing system from ancient Gandhara, a region corresponding to modern Pakistan and Afghanistan, which was used to record Sanskrit and Gandhari Prakrit. This coin offers a tangible connection to the diverse linguistic and political landscape of the ancient world.
