Dating back to approximately 58 BC, this silver tetradrachm comes from the Indo-Scythian Kingdom under the rule of Azes. The coin serves as a remarkable physical record of ancient cultural fusion, representing some of the earliest known bilingual coinage in history. These pieces circulated widely in the ancient world, even during the era of Christ, and may have functioned as tribute paid directly to the king. The obverse of the coin displays a powerful image of the king mounted on horseback, facing to the right. On the reverse, the design typically features classical Greek deities, such as Zeus, Athena, or Poseidon, illustrating the deep Hellenistic influence in the region. What makes this coinage exceptionally fascinating to scholars is the dual presence of different writing systems. The inscriptions are rendered in both Greek lettering and the ancient Kharosthi script.
