Dating back to the archaic period between 625 and 522 BC, this remarkably small electrum coin from the ancient region of Ionia, specifically Phocaea, represents some of the earliest technology in metal currency. Minted as a 1/48 stater, this tiny treasure is composed of electrum, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver that was highly prized in the ancient Mediterranean world. The obverse of this fractional piece features the detailed profile of a griffin head facing to the left. Despite the incredibly minute scale of the coin, the mythical creature is rendered with striking clarity. On the reverse, the coin displays a classic quadripartite incuse square, a traditional geometric punch mark characteristic of the very earliest stages of coinage development. This particular specimen has survived the millennia in exceptional condition, earning a Choice Extra Fine grading. It is noted for its outstanding physical qualities, including a perfect five out of five rating for its strike, a four out of five surface rating, and a special star designation highlighting its exceptional eye appeal.
