In the ancient region of Ionia, during the dawn of coinage between 600 and 550 BC, an intriguing currency emerged. This third stater is struck from electrum, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver that served as the canvas for some of humanity's very first metallic money. Weighing 4.79 grams, this small piece of metal carries the weight of immense historical significance. The obverse of this ancient coin features a stylized animal head facing left, interpreted by scholars as either a lion or a seal. This primal imagery represents the early artistic choices of a society experimenting with the concept of a standardized currency. The reverse is remarkably simple, displaying two incuse square punch marks, which were a direct result of the primitive minting process where the metal was driven into the die. This particular specimen has survived more than two and a half millennia in remarkable condition, certified as Choice Extra Fine. It has been evaluated with a strike rating of 3 out of 5 and a surface quality rating of 4 out of 5, offering a tangible connection to the very beginnings of commerce and art in the Mediterranean world.
