Dating back to the period from 103 to 76 BC, this ancient bronze coin from Judaea carries an extraordinary connection to the past. These small, humble pieces circulated extensively during the lifetime of Jesus. Because of their widespread use in daily life, scholars believe this type of coin represents the very 'mites' praised in the biblical Gospel of Mark (12:43), where a poor widow gave all she had to the temple treasury. Crafted from bronze, the coin features a radiant sun enclosed within a circular border on its obverse side. The reverse displays a centered votive object. Having survived millennia, these specimens are preserved in heavily worn, average circulated condition, showing the tangible softening of details that comes from extensive handling in the ancient marketplace.
