Dating back to the years 103 to 76 BC, this ancient bronze coin from Judaea carries an extraordinary legacy. Known widely as a widow's mite, this small denomination circulated extensively throughout the region. Because these humble bronze pieces remained in active use for over a hundred years, they were still a common sight during the lifetime of Jesus. The design features a radiant sun enclosed within a neat circle on the obverse side. On the reverse, a central votive object is depicted. This specific type of coinage is highly regarded as the very type of 'mite' highlighted in the biblical Gospel of Mark (12:43), where a widow's tiny offering of two small copper coins was praised as a grand gesture of faith.
