Kingdom of Macedon AR Drachm Alexander III (336-323 BC) AU NGC
This ancient silver drachm originates from the Kingdom of Macedon during the era of Alexander III, famously known as Alexander the Great, spanning the years 336 to 323 BC. Struck as an early posthumous issue, the coin represents a classic era of ancient Mediterranean coinage, preserved in an exceptional Almost Uncirculated state. The obverse of the coin features a detailed profile of the mythical hero Heracles facing right, draped in his signature lion skin headpiece. This powerful imagery is paired on the reverse with a depiction of the god Zeus seated on a throne facing left. In his hands, Zeus holds both an eagle and a scepter, symbols of supreme authority. To the side of the seated deity, the Greek inscription ALÉXANDROU is visible. The reverse design also features a distinct control mark, a filleted palm frond positioned in the left field. Containing approximately 0.1420 troy ounces of silver, this certified ancient piece offers a vivid window into the artistry and political messaging of the Macedonian empire.
