During the reign of Alexander III of Macedon, from 336 to 323 BC, a silver coinage emerged that would set the benchmark for currency across the ancient world. This silver drachm, weighing approximately 0.14 troy ounces, represents a highly influential design that circulated extensively throughout the vast Macedonian empire, serving as a standard of trade and trust. The obverse of the coin features a detailed profile of the mythical hero Heracles facing right, draped in his signature lion-skin headdress. This powerful imagery is paired on the reverse with a depiction of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, seated on his throne facing left. In his hands, Zeus holds a scepter and a perched eagle. The reverse also bears the Greek inscription BAΣΙΛEΩΣ, denoting the king's authority.
