Kushan Empire AE Tetradrachm (1st-2nd Cent AD) NGC (XF Details)
This ancient copper tetradrachm originates from the Kushan Empire, dating back to the first or second century AD. It represents a fascinating intersection of cultures, reflecting the diverse artistic influences that flowed along the ancient trade routes of Central Asia. The obverse of the coin displays a right-facing bust adorned with a diadem, showcasing a distinct Greek artistic influence in its style and presentation. This portrait represents the ruler known as Soter Megas, whose coinage circulated widely across the region. On the reverse, the design transitions to a different cultural tradition, depicting the king mounted on a horse. Accompanying this equestrian image are characters in the ancient Sanskrit script, illustrating the rich linguistic and cultural synthesis that characterized the Kushan Kingdom.
