In the ancient region of Lydia, located in modern-day Turkey, a revolutionary concept took shape during the seventh century BC. This electrum third-stater, minted between 610 and 546 BC, represents the very dawn of coinage. Crafted from electrum, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver, this specimen weighs approximately 4.7 grams and carries a certified grade of Fine. The obverse of this remarkably early coin displays a powerful lion head, depicted with a radiant sun symbol above its brow. This fierce imagery served as an official stamp of authority in the ancient Mediterranean world. On the reverse, the coin features a bipartite incuse die punch, a deep double indentation left by the primitive minting tools of the era before double-sided artistic dies were developed. These early Lydian issues circulated during a pivotal epoch of human history. The production of this specific coinage came to an end when the Persian Empire conquered Lydia in 546 BC, making surviving specimens fascinating tangible links to the birth of global commerce.
