Dating back to the ancient world between 166 and 128 BC, this silver cistophorus from the region of Lydia offers a window into the enigmatic imagery of the past. Weighing 12.68 grams, this coin belongs to the celebrated Ionian Silver Cistophorus series, a coinage system that played a major role in the regional commerce of Asia Minor. The obverse of the coin features the cista mystica, a sacred basket used in ancient mystery cults, out of which a serpent emerges. This central image is framed by a detailed, woven ivy wreath. On the reverse, the design showcases an elaborate bow case flanked by two coiled serpents, a powerful and recurring motif of the era.
