During the mid second century BC, the region of Macedonia in northern Greece functioned under Roman authority. This silver tetradrachm, minted between 167 and 148 BC, offers a physical connection to this transitional era of ancient history. Weighing 16.7 grams and measuring 30 millimeters in diameter, the substantial silver piece served as a primary medium of exchange in the northern Aegean. The obverse of the coin features a traditional Macedonian shield. At the very center of this defensive emblem sits the bust of Artemis Tauropolos, the Greek goddess of the hunt, facing right with her quiver visible over her shoulder. This design combined local military pride with religious devotion. On the reverse, the imagery shifts to a central club, an attribute associated with Herakles, surrounded by a detailed oak wreath. The Greek inscription refers to the regional division of Macedonia where the coin was issued. This specimen has survived more than two millennia, earning a Choice Fine grading tier for its well-preserved details.
