In the turbulent years following the death of Alexander the Great, his successor Philip III struck silver coinage that carried powerful, universally recognized imagery across the ancient world. Minted between 323 and 317 BC, this silver drachm represents a classic era of Macedonian numismatics, combining artistic mastery with political messaging. The obverse of this coin features a detailed, right-facing bust of the legendary hero Heracles. He is depicted wearing his signature headdress fashioned from the skin of the Nemean Lion, a symbol of strength and divine lineage. On the reverse, the supreme deity Zeus is shown seated on a throne, facing left. In his hands, he holds a regal scepter and a perched eagle, projecting authority and celestial favor. Struck in silver with a weight of approximately 4.3 grams and a diameter of around 17 mm, this ancient piece has survived millennia with remarkable detail.
