Macedonia Gold Stater of Philip II (359-336 BC) AU NGC FS (5/4)
Struck during the era of Philip II, who ruled from 359 to 336 BC, this ancient gold stater offers a window into the artistry of the Macedonian Kingdom. The obverse side displays the laureate profile of the deity Apollo, facing right with finely detailed features that capture the classical aesthetic of the period. On the reverse, a spirited scene unfolds as a charioteer guides a two-horse chariot, known as a biga, in a rightward motion. Positioned beneath the galloping horses is a thunderbolt symbol, while the name of King Philip is inscribed in the lower section, or exergue, of the coin. Weighing 8.59 grams (approximately 0.2760 troy ounces) of gold, this specimen survives in a certified Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the remarkable detail of its ancient engraving.
