Macedonian Silver Drachm Alexander III (336-300 BC) VF-XF

0.2800 troy oz 336-300 BC Very Fine/Extra Fine

Struck during the monumental era of 336 to 300 BC, this silver drachm offers a direct connection to the ancient Macedonian empire under the rule of Alexander III, famously known as Alexander the Great. Weighing approximately 0.28 troy ounces, this silver coin served as a primary medium of exchange across a rapidly expanding ancient world. The obverse side of the coin features a detailed profile of the mythical hero Heracles facing right, draped in his signature lion skin headdress. This powerful image was a central symbol of strength and divine lineage for the Macedonian rulers. On the reverse, the god Zeus is depicted seated on a throne, facing left. In his hands, he holds a sceptre and an eagle, traditional symbols of his supreme authority. To the right of the deity, the Greek inscription 'ALEXANDROY' is engraved, marking the authority of the king. Individual specimens of these hand-struck coins feature varying monograms, making each surviving piece a distinct artifact from antiquity.
