Macedonian Silver Drachm Alexander III (336-323 BC) VG-Fine

0.2800 troy oz 336-323 BC Very Good/Fine

This ancient silver drachm dates to the era of 336 to 323 BC, a period defined by the legendary rule of Alexander III, famously known as Alexander the Great. Struck in silver, this coin offers a tangible connection to the classical Mediterranean world, surviving in Very Good to Fine condition. The obverse of the coin displays a right-facing bust of Heracles, the mythological hero, draped in his iconic lion skin headpiece. This powerful imagery is paired on the reverse with a depiction of Zeus, who is shown seated on a throne facing left. In his hands, the king of the gods holds both an eagle and a sceptre, symbols of supreme authority. To the right of the seated figure of Zeus, the Greek inscription "ALEXANDROY" is clearly visible, marking the authority under which the coin was issued. While the main design elements remain consistent, the specific monograms appearing on the reverse of these individual silver pieces vary, making each surviving specimen a unique object of study.
