Dating back to the legendary era of 336 to 300 BC, this silver tetradrachm is a tangible connection to the ancient Macedonian empire under Alexander III, famously known as Alexander the Great. Each of these substantial silver pieces weighs between 16 and 17.5 grams, with a diameter spanning 27 to 31 millimeters. These dimensions make the coin a remarkably tactile artifact from the ancient world, even when preserved in a lower grade or showing the physical signs of ancient circulation, such as test cuts. The obverse of the coin features a powerful right-facing profile of the mythical hero Heracles, draped in his signature lion skin headpiece. This imagery was highly symbolic during Alexander's reign, projecting strength and divine lineage. On the reverse, the deity Zeus is depicted seated on a throne facing left, holding an eagle in one hand and a sceptre in the other. To the right of the seated god, the Greek inscription "ALEXANDROY" is visible, alongside various monograms that can differ from coin to coin, marking the authority under which this ancient currency was minted.
