Deep within the Gulf of Mexico, a sunken Spanish brigantine held a massive cargo of silver for over two centuries. This silver 2 Reales coin was salvaged from that very vessel, the El Cazador, which vanished in 1784 while sailing to New Orleans. The coins recovered from the ocean floor bear the physical hallmarks of their long underwater journey, showing the distinct wear and surface textures typical of shipwreck salvage. Struck in Mexico City from 90.3 percent pure silver, this piece contains 0.1965 troy ounces of precious metal. Most of the coinage rescued from the wreckage is dated 1783, though some older issues were also on board. The cargo was diverse, containing various denominations of circulating Spanish currency from the era, including 8 Reales, 4 Reales, and 2 Reales pieces, alongside the famous Pillar Dollar variety. The coin features a classic design of the Spanish Empire. On one side, crowned globes rest between the iconic Pillars of Hercules. The opposite side displays the crowned royal arms of Spain, with the distinctive Bourbon coat of arms positioned at the center of the shield. This certified genuine specimen offers a direct, tangible connection to a famous maritime disaster and the lost wealth of the Spanish colonial trade routes.
