For centuries, the silver Akce served as a fundamental monetary unit of the Ottoman Empire. These small silver pieces, minted from approximately 1450 to the 1800s, circulated widely across a vast territory. Because they were produced over such a long era, individual examples display naturally varying dimensions, with distinct differences in thickness and width from one coin to the next. Both sides of the Akce are adorned with elegant Arabic lettering. The obverse and reverse designs rely entirely on this calligraphy, showcasing the artistic script of the region rather than pictorial images. Each coin survives in average circulated condition, bearing the soft wear of its journey through the historic marketplace. Containing approximately 0.04 troy ounces of silver, these hand-struck coins offer a direct connection to the daily commerce of the Ottoman world.
