During the turbulent years of 218 to 222 AD, the Roman Empire was ruled by Elagabalus, a member of the Severan dynasty who became famous for his vibrant personality and his dramatic religious reforms. Among his most notable acts was elevating the cult of the Syrian sun god, Elagabal, to a position of primary importance within the Roman pantheon. This ancient billon tetradrachm, struck at the provincial mint in Antioch, Syria, serves as a tangible connection to this highly unusual reign. Crafted from billon, a traditional alloy combining silver with base metal, the coin features a detailed portrait of the young emperor on its obverse. He is depicted facing right, wearing a laurel wreath, and surrounded by his Greek imperial titles. The reverse displays a powerful image of an eagle standing and facing forward, clutching a military standard in its talons and holding a wreath in its beak, a classic symbol of Roman authority in the eastern provinces. This specimen has survived the centuries to be certified in Fine condition, offering a fascinating glimpse into the art and politics of the ancient world.
