0.3300 troy oz 117-138 AD Fine

During the reign of Emperor Hadrian, from 117 to 138 AD, the Roman Empire produced a distinctive silver denomination known as the Cistophoric Tetradrachm. This particular coin, weighing 10.53 grams, was minted in the ancient city of Ephesus, a major hub of culture and religion in Asia Minor. Struck in silver, the piece offers a tangible connection to the administrative and artistic traditions of the era. The obverse side of the coin displays a right-facing portrait of Hadrian with a bare head, captured from a perspective slightly from behind. This depiction highlights the classical portraiture styles favored during his rule, emphasizing realistic features and a dignified posture. On the reverse, the coin features a detailed architectural rendering of the famous temple of Diana of Ephesus. Within this ornate four-columned temple stands the cult statue of the goddess herself. The temple is depicted on a three-tiered base, with its pediment decorated with flanking figures around a table and dish, alongside two reclining figures in the corners. The top of the temple structure is further adorned with a decorated acrostolium, showcasing the intricate engraving skills of the ancient Ephesus mint.
