Dating back to approximately 79 BC, this ancient Roman silver coin is a fascinating specimen of the Denarius Serratus, a type distinguished by its textured, serrated edges. Struck during the Roman Republic, this piece weighs about 4.0 grams and carries a rich visual narrative from over two thousand years ago. It survives today in Very Fine condition, allowing modern observers to study its classical artistry in remarkable detail. The obverse of the coin features the elegant, diademed profile of Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, looking toward the right. Tucked behind her portrait are the letters 'S C', representing 'Senatus Consulto', which indicates the coinage was authorized by decree of the Roman Senate. On the reverse, the design showcases Victory driving a triga, a relatively uncommon three-horse chariot, as she speeds toward the right while gripping the reins.
