Roman AR Denarius Serratus Q. Ant. Balbus (83-82 BC) XF Cr-364/1
Dating back to the turbulent years of 83 to 82 BC, this silver Denarius Serratus offers a tangible connection to the ancient Roman Republic. The coin is distinguished by its serrated edge, a deliberate and striking design choice from the era. Weighing approximately 3.90 grams with a silver content of 0.1200 troy ounces, this piece has survived more than two millennia to be graded in Extra Fine condition. The obverse features the laureate head of Jupiter, the king of the Roman gods, in profile facing right. Accompanying the deity is the inscription "S C", representing the authority of the Roman Senate. On the reverse, the design depicts Victory driving a four-horse chariot, known as a quadriga, at a gallop to the right. She holds a wreath and a palm branch, traditional symbols of triumph. A control letter "A" is also visible on this side, serving as an ancient mint mark or quality control indicator.
