In the turbulent year of 69 AD, the Roman Empire witnessed the rapid rise and fall of four different rulers. Among them was Vitellius, whose brief hold on power is captured in the surviving coinage of the era. This silver denarius, weighing approximately 3.2 grams, serves as a direct physical connection to that chaotic period of ancient Roman history. The obverse side of this coin features a detailed portrait of Vitellius, depicted with a laureate head. On the reverse, the goddess Vesta is shown in a seated position, representing the traditional hearth and home of Rome.
