During a period of immense political instability in the ancient Roman world, a young ruler emerged to lead an empire. Gordian III, who was the grandson of Gordian I and the nephew of Gordian II, assumed the throne at the conclusion of the chaotic year 238 AD. Though he held the title of Emperor, the true authority of the state resided with the Praetorian Prefects. His brief reign, which included his marriage to Tranquillina, ultimately ended with his death and the subsequent rise of Philip I to power. This silver double denarius, minted between 238 and 244 AD, offers a tangible connection to this turbulent era. Weighing 3.63 grams with a diameter of roughly 22 millimeters, the coin has survived in remarkable Almost Uncirculated condition. Its preservation allows us to appreciate the artistry of the ancient mint workers, who captured both imperial authority and traditional Roman values on a small piece of silver. The front of the coin displays a right-facing portrait of the youthful Emperor Gordian III. On the reverse, the design features Felicitas, the Roman personification of good fortune and prosperity. She is depicted standing while holding a caduceus, a traditional herald's staff, alongside a cornucopia, symbolizing abundance. This imagery served as a powerful message of hope and stability to the citizens of the Roman Empire during a time of great uncertainty.
