Roman BI Dbl Denarius Victorinus AU NGC (Petherton Hoard Vault)
Struck during a turbulent chapter of the ancient world, this billon double denarius originates from the Romano-Gallic Empire, a breakaway state that split from Rome. Minted during the brief reign of Emperor Victorinus, which spanned from 269 to 271 AD, the coin serves as a tangible survivor of third-century regional rule. The obverse of the coin displays a right-facing portrait of Victorinus, depicted with a radiate crown, draped shoulders, and protective cuirass armor. On the reverse, the figure of Felicitas, the Roman personification of good fortune and success, stands facing right. This particular specimen was recovered from the South Petherton Hoard, a significant archaeological find that preserved these ancient treasures for centuries. It has survived in remarkable About Uncirculated condition, offering an incredibly clear look at the artistry and political messaging of a short-lived imperial breakaway.
