Roman BI Tetradrachm Otacillia Severa (244-49 AD) Ch XF NGC
Struck during the turbulent years of 244 to 249 AD, this ancient Roman tetradrachm offers a tangible connection to the imperial court of Otacillia Severa. Produced in the historic mint of Antioch, the coin is composed of billon, a low-grade silver alloy frequently utilized during this era of Roman history. The obverse of the coin displays a detailed portrait of the empress Otacillia Severa looking toward the right. She is depicted wearing a stephane, a traditional diadem-like crown, while a crescent moon rests behind her shoulders, a classic symbol associated with the empress in Roman coinage. On the reverse, a powerful eagle stands facing forward with its head and tail turned to the right. The bird holds a crown within its beak, its wings spread wide in a dramatic display of imperial authority. This specific specimen has been preserved in remarkable condition, officially graded as Choice Extra Fine.
