Roman Dbl Denarius Otacilia Severa 244-49 AD XF NGC (Random Coin)

0.1200 troy oz 244-249 AD Extra Fine (NGC)

Struck during a pivotal era of the Roman Empire, this silver double denarius features the bust of Empress Marcia Otacilia Severa, who ruled alongside her husband, Philip the Arab, from 244 to 249 AD. The couple is historically notable for their remarkable tolerance toward the early Christian community, earning them recognition as the first Christian imperial couple. This period of relative peace allowed Otacilia Severa to actively intervene in religious affairs, famously stepping in to protect Saint Babylas, the Bishop of Antioch, from persecution. While the obverse of this ancient silver coin displays the portrait of the empress, the reverse designs vary, depicting different Greek deities alongside representations of key political, military, and religious principles of the Roman state. These symbolic images served as vital communication tools, projecting messages of stability and divine favor throughout a vast empire. The stability of the imperial family was short-lived, however. In August of 249 AD, Philip was killed in battle, and shortly thereafter, the Praetorian Guard assassinated their young son. Having survived the violent downfall of her family, Otacilia Severa spent the remainder of her life living in obscurity. This certified Extra Fine coin offers a tangible connection to her remarkable life and the dramatic final years of her family's reign.
