Roman Empire AE As Divus Augustus (22-30 AD) Ch VF 5/3 (RIC I 81)
During the reign of Tiberius, the Roman Empire produced this bronze AE As to mark the elevation of the deceased Emperor Augustus to divine status. Struck between the years 22 and 30 AD, the coin serves as a physical testament to the imperial cult and the transition of power in early imperial Rome. One side of this ancient bronze piece displays a left-facing portrait of Augustus wearing a radiate crown, a symbol of his post-mortem deification. The opposite side features a large SC monogram, which stands for Senatus Consulto, indicating the coin was minted by senatorial decree. This monogram surrounds a detailed representation of an altar enclosure complete with a double-paneled door, accompanied by the inscription. Weighing 10.69 grams, this historic artifact is cataloged as RIC I 81. It survives in Choice Very Fine condition, allowing modern observers to appreciate the fine details of Roman craftsmanship from nearly two millennia ago.
