During the height of the Roman Empire, silver denarii circulated as the backbone of daily commerce. This particular silver coin, minted during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius between 138 and 161 AD, survives in Choice About Uncirculated condition, offering an incredibly clear window into the artistry of the second century. The obverse of the coin displays a detailed, right-facing portrait of Antoninus Pius adorned with a laureate wreath. The partial inscription ANTO remains visible, identifying the emperor. On the reverse, the design features Annona, the personification of the grain supply, standing and facing left.
