Dating back to the foundational era of the Roman Empire, this silver denarius represents the long reign of its very first emperor, Augustus, who ruled from 27 BC to 14 AD. Struck at the ancient mint of Lugdunum, located in modern-day France, this coin served as a powerful medium for imperial messaging across a vast territory. This particular specimen survives in a well-preserved Very Fine state of preservation, offering a tangible connection to the ancient Mediterranean world. The obverse side of the coin features a right-facing portrait of Augustus wearing a laurel wreath. Surrounding his profile is the Latin inscription CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE, a title that proclaims him as the son of a deified ruler and the father of his country. This portraiture and text combined to reinforce his supreme authority and divine connection to the Roman public. On the reverse, the design shifts to the future of the dynasty, depicting the emperor's adopted sons and intended successors, Gaius and Lucius Caesar. The two young men are shown standing and facing forward, positioned with a pair of shields and spears placed between them.
