During the height of the Roman Empire, silver denarii circulated as the backbone of daily commerce. This particular silver coin, minted during the reign of Emperor Trajan between 98 and 117 AD, offers a direct connection to the administration of one of Rome's most celebrated rulers. Struck in silver with a weight of approximately 0.12 troy ounces, the piece survives today in a detailed Very Fine state of preservation. The obverse of the coin features a classic imperial portrait, depicting a laureate bust of Trajan facing to the right. On the reverse, the design shifts to a martial theme, showing the Roman god of war, Mars, walking toward the right while holding a military trophy. The reverse also bears the Latin inscription PM TRP COS IIII PP, which refers to the emperor's official titles and offices held at the time of minting. Cataloged by numismatists as RIC II 52, this artifact stands as a fascinating testament to Roman imperial iconography and monetary history.
