Struck during a transformative era of the Roman Empire, this silver denarius features the right-facing portrait of Emperor Septimius Severus, who ruled from 193 to 211 AD. The obverse displays the detailed bust of the ruler, while the reverse of these coins can feature a variety of different historical designs. This particular specimen has survived the centuries in Extra Fine condition, offering a remarkably preserved look at ancient Roman artistry. Septimius Severus left a significant mark on the Roman military, famously increasing the annual salary of his soldiers from 375 to 500 denarii. His reign was defined by his close relationship with the army, a theme that carried through to his final days. While on a military campaign in northern Britain, the emperor passed away, leaving his sons with a legendary piece of advice: to maintain harmony with one another, show generosity to the troops, and ignore everyone else.
