During a period of intense upheaval known as the Roman Crisis, a breakaway state emerged in the West. This ancient double denarius, minted between 271 and 274 AD, comes directly from that rebellious Gallic Empire. It features the profile of Tetricus I, the ruler who steered this separatist regime during its final years before the territories were reunited with Rome. Crafted from billon, a copper alloy containing a trace amount of silver, the coin displays a detailed portrait of the emperor wearing a radiate crown on the obverse. The reverse designs of these issues fluctuated, often depicting traditional deities, personified Roman virtues, or military motifs to project stability and authority during chaotic times. This specific piece carries an extraordinary modern provenance, having been recovered in 2018 as part of the English Bicknor Hoard. Now preserved in Very Fine condition, the coin serves as a tangible survivor of third-century political fragmentation, offering a direct connection to the soldiers and citizens who lived through the fracturing of the Roman world.
